Have you been browsing our fragrance collection before and get confused by some of the names? What do mountains, eclipses, snowflakes and gold even smell like? We’re here to break down the naming behind fragrances and take a bit of the confusion away so you know what scents you are purchasing.
We work with our perfumist to create the most divine and delicious smells. When it smells exactly like a fruit, flower or food, the name is easy, it’ll be named after that. This includes fragrance like our lime, raspberry, caramel, and chocolate fragrances. When purchasing these, you have somewhat of an idea about what you are expecting from the fragrance because it is in the name.
But what happens when the smell doesn’t resemble a food?
Naming it becomes tricky and we have to think about what that perfect name for the fragrance will be. We haven’t just created a smell, we’ve created an emotion, a feeling or have captured a moment in time and we try to name the fragrance to resemble what that is. We do have a few rules that we follow.
The Aqua Rule
Anything with an aqua based name like river, coast, beach, or water will be fresh and more masculine in style. It is like a clean cologne but will have enticing hints of other scents, depending on what the exact fragrance is.
The Location Rule
Anything named after a particular place or location we feel that the particular fragrance has embodied either the smells of that location, or the lifestyle that you would expect with that. An example is our Blue Mountains, it is a combination of Australian botanicals with that feeling of breathing in clean mountain air. The Tuscan Sun is a delightful blend of what you would be smelling while traversing through the wineries of Tuscany. It’s warming, with hints of florals, fruits and musk, it transports you right to the Italian countryside.
The Descriptive Rule
If the fragrance doesn’t fall into the above categories, it falls into the descriptive rule. This is where the fragrance is named from what we feel best describes that fragrance. The Lunar Eclipse is creating a description for a dark, alluring style of fragrance which comes from the amber and musk. Our Snowflake and Cashmere resembles a wintry Christmas, while the top notes of coconut give that soft snow feel.
But what does it smell like?
When the name doesn’t give too much away, that is when you need to rely on the fragrance notes to get an idea about the scents of particular fragrances. This is under each fragrance description where it lists the top notes, mid notes and base notes. These are descriptors for the fragrance so that you have a clearer idea about what that fragrance will smell like. Keep in mind, that the only way to really know what the fragrance smells like is not through a screen but in person. We are still working on getting smells to transfer through computers (we haven’t gotten far).
Overall, it’s not so much about being able to understand a fragrance by its name, rather if you like that smell or not. The names will only hint at the captivating notes it holds. All our fragrances go through rigorous testing to ensure that are the highest quality, Australian made fragrance oils available on the market. This way, you don’t have to worry about their quality when purchasing your candle and diffuser supplies from us. You only have to wonder if the fragrance will be your new favourite.
