Fragrance Explained
When crafting candles, you're faced with a myriad of options for scenting your creations, from fragrance oils to essential oils. Your choice ultimately depends on the desired outcome for your candle. If you're seeking an array of playful fragrances like those inspired by flavours or perfumes, or complex blends for a cost-effective product, fragrance oils are the way to go. For those aiming for a simpler, more natural, albeit pricier candle, essential oils are the preferred option.
Fragrances are often categorised into groups like citrus, sweet, floral, and warm, but delving deeper into top, middle, and base notes provides a more nuanced understanding of their composition.
Bespoke Fragrance
Sometimes, you may not find the perfect fragrance that consistently hits the mark. In such cases, blending complementary fragrances to craft your own bespoke scent is the next step.
Testing is paramount when mixing fragrances. Just as individual fragrance oils smell different straight from the bottle compared to when incorporated into wax and set, mixed fragrances undergo a transformation in scent. Keep this in mind while blending and evaluating your creations.
As mentioned earlier, thorough testing is crucial when mixing fragrances. Understanding your chosen fragrances and determining which one you want to dominate the blend will dictate the distribution of your fragrance. Note that fragrance loading should always remain between 6% and 10% when working with 100% concentrated fragrance oils. Additionally, essential oils, due to their predominantly low flashpoint, should not exceed 4% fragrance loading.
