Why is my wick mushrooming?
Mushrooming is a common occurrence with 100% cotton wicks and can also happen if the wick burns for an extended period or if the vessel size exceeds the wick's capacity. If mushrooming does happen, allow the wick to cool completely, then simply remove the excess cotton. It's a typical characteristic of working with 100% cotton wicks.
Why is my candle tunnelling?
Tunnelling typically indicates that the wick size is too small for your vessel. Making sure your wick is the correct size by measuring the diameter of your vessel and selecting the wick with the correct burning diameter. Additionally, if you've added colour to your candle, it may clog the wick and lead to tunnelling even with the correct wick size. Opt for the next size up in wick to resolve this issue.
If you are using a harder wax, like bees wax, you may also need to select the next wick size up. Testing is recommended.
Why does my soy wax have holes in it once it is set?
Holes in soy wax can result from air bubbles during the setting process. Factors such as pouring wax too quickly, high humidity, pouring at a high temperature, temperature disparity between the hot wax and the container, or moving the container with molten wax can cause air bubbles. If air bubbles are present, gently poke them with a toothpick and use a heat gun to reset the wax surface. While air bubbles are common with 100% soy wax due to its purity, they are easily rectified.
How much fragrance should I use in my candles?
We recommend using between 6% - 8% fragrance loading with our Australian made fragrance oil and our 100% soy wax. Some waxes can take up to 10% fragrance loading. Testing is recommended.
Can I use 100% Soy Wax for Moulds?
No, 100% Soy Wax is softer and suited for container use. It may not hold its shape well in standalone moulds. Most mould-use waxes contain paraffin wax, which we do not stock due to its petroleum-derived nature. However, you can utilise our pillar blend wax specifically formulated for mould use. For natural alternatives, consider experimenting with a blend of beeswax and soy wax, both of which are healthier options. Finding the perfect ratio may require testing.
