Choosing fragrances is a lot of fun, especially when there are so many different types. We have floral, fruity, couture fragrances, Christmas scents and more.
When selecting your fragrance, think about the smells you like, or if it’s for a business, what your target customers are going to like.
When looking at the fragrances, they’ll describe the flavours you’ll pick up in them. The top notes are the strongest flavours while the mid and bottom notes are the beautiful touches you’ll get once you start burning the fragrances or using them in your products.
What is fragrance load?
For candles we recommend a 6% to 8% loading with our premium Australian made fragrances. This means that the total make up of your candle with only have 8% fragrance and 92% would be the wax. The fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance you need to the total product.
Each fragrance on our website will have the recommended fragrance load for the type of product you are making.
Working out how much fragrance you need.
If you are making candles with an 8% fragrance load, you’ll need to measure your jar out. If you are using a 300ml jar, an 8% fragrance load would be 24ml. This means your container would have 276ml of wax needed and 24ml of fragrance. The equation to working this out using the recommended 8% fragrance load is below.
Millilitres of the jar x 0.08 = millilitres of fragrance you need.
Testing with Fragrance
We always recommend testing first. We sell our fragrances in 50ml bottles for this reason. You can trial a fragrance to see if it not only the smell you wanted, but to test to see what your desired fragrance load is. This way you can ensure the fragrances are what you wanted before committing to larger quantities.
Using your fragrances
You want to mix your fragrance with the wax when it is between 70oC and 80oC. Slowly pour your fragrance into the wax and stir together using a flat stirring rod for at least a minute. This is to ensure that your wax and fragrance are properly bound.
Once you’ve finished making your candles, you want to leave them for at least twenty-four hours before burning them but longer you wait, the better. A week or two will give the fragrance more time to properly bind with the wax giving off a better fragrance throw.
